The Devout Childhood of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, 1852 (oil on canvas)

2956857 The Devout Childhood of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, 1852 (oil on canvas) by Collins, Charles Alston (1828-73); 91.44x60.96 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: The quotation is from Butlers Lives of the Saints. The young Saint Elizabeth is so pious that she prays at the door of the chapel rather than wait for it to open. After 160 years, this important and beautiful early Pre-Raphaelite painting has been recently rediscovered. Collins was the most able of the Pre-Raphaelite painters after his close friends Millais and Hunt, and Rossetti. It is one of the first paintings Elizabeth Siddal modelled for, before she was claimed by Rossetti as his exclusive muse, and it is the first to feature the door later used by Holman Hunt in his famous painting The Light of the World. It is partly painted onto a wet white ground, making the silk of the dress wonderfully iridescent. St Elizabeth... was intended for the Royal Academy in 1851 as a companion picture to MillaisA Return of the Dove to the Ark, but Collins could not finish it in time, and it was shown instead the following year. Both pictures, which are similar sizes, are in identical frames designed by Millais. The attention to detail in the grass, pebbles and plants, and the religious subject matter, are typical of the small handful of early Pre-Raphaelite paintings that revolutionised British art.); Photo eThe Ms Gallery, London; English, out of copyright

The Devout Childhood of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, 1852

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil on canvas painting by Charles Alston Collins. This recently rediscovered masterpiece depicts the young Saint Elizabeth in her unwavering devotion to prayer. Standing at the closed door of the chapel, she chooses not to wait for it to open but instead kneels down and prays fervently. Collins, one of the most talented Pre-Raphaelite painters, showcases his exceptional attention to detail in this artwork. The grass, pebbles, and plants are meticulously rendered with precision and realism. The religious subject matter reflects the profound influence that faith had on British art during this period. This painting holds historical significance as it features Elizabeth Siddal as one of its models before she became exclusively associated with Dante Gabriel Rossetti's work. Additionally, it is the first artwork to include the iconic door later used by Holman Hunt in his renowned piece "The Light of the World". Particularly noteworthy is Collins' technique of partially painting onto a wet white ground, resulting in an iridescent effect on St. Elizabeth's silk dress. This adds depth and luminosity to an already stunning composition. Originally intended as a companion piece for Millais' "A Return of the Dove to the Ark" this remarkable artwork was exhibited separately due to Collins' inability to complete it on time for display at Royal Academy in 1851. After being hidden from public view for over 160 years, this significant early Pre-Raphaelite painting has finally resurfaced and can now be admired for its beauty and artistic mastery.
