Robert John Cross was born circa 1888 in Lincolnshire and lived and worked in Doncaster as a Labourer before and after his military service. He enlisted as a private on 5 March 1901. Cross was discharged on 30 August 1902 after a year and 179 days service.
The 3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry was part of the first contingent of volunteers raised for service in the Boer War (1899-1902). The 109th (Yorkshire Hussars) Company was part of this volunteer force, drawn primarily from existing county Yeomanry units, sent to South Africa to reinforce regular forces which had suffered serious setbacks in 1899.
The Queens South Africa Medal was awarded to soldiers who served during the Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa between 11 October 1899 and 31 May 1902. This print showcases the Queens South Africa Medal belonging to Private Robert John Cross, a member of the 109th (Yorkshire Hussars) Company, 3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. Created by the British School in the 19th century, this historical artifact is currently housed at the National Army Museum in London. Private Cross was born around 1888 in Lincolnshire and worked as a laborer in Doncaster before and after his military service. Enlisting on March 5,1901, he served for one year and 179 days before being discharged on August 30,1902. During the Boer War (1899-1902), which took place in South Africa, the first contingent of volunteers raised for service included the esteemed 3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. The volunteer force consisted primarily of existing county Yeomanry units sent to reinforce regular forces that had suffered significant setbacks in 1899. The renowned Queens South Africa Medal was awarded to soldiers who served during this war between October 11,1899 and May 31,1902. Private Cross's medal proudly displays five clasps representing Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa in both years -1901 and -1902. A total of twenty-six clasps were awarded with this prestigious medal. This remarkable photograph immortalizes an important piece of history while honoring Private Robert John Cross's brave service during a tumultuous time.
