Hand-colored copperplate engraving from a drawing by Johann Ihle from Ebenezer Sibly's "Universal System of Natural History" 1794.

The prolific Sibly published his Universal System of Natural History in 1794~1796 in five volumes covering the three natural worlds of fauna, flora and geology. The series included illustrations of mythical beasts such as the sukotyro and the mermaid, and depicted sloths sitting on the ground (instead of hanging from trees) and a domesticated female orang utan wearing a bandana. The engravings were by J. Pass, J. Chapman and Barlow copied from original drawings by famous natural history artists George Edwards, Albertus Seba, Maria Sybilla Merian, and Johann Ihle.); © Florilegius

The Caffre Man

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a striking image that captures the essence of a native South African warrior. In this hand-colored copperplate engraving from Johann Ihle, we see a powerful figure holding three spears, his body adorned only with a necklace of bones and a red belt around his waist. The intensity in his gaze and the strength in his stance speak volumes about the resilience and pride of the indigenous people of Africa. This depiction comes from Ebenezer Sibly's "Universal System of Natural History," published in 1794. Sibly's work was groundbreaking for its time, covering various aspects of natural history including fauna, flora, and geology. The illustrations included mythical creatures like the sukotyro and mermaid, as well as unique depictions such as sloths on the ground instead of trees. The engravings in this series were done by talented artists like J. Pass, J. Chapman, and Barlow, based on original drawings by renowned natural history illustrators George Edwards, Albertus Seba, Maria Sybilla Merian, and Johann Ihle. "The Caffre Man" serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and diversity found in different parts of the world.
