EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Dodo and the Guiney Pig" transports us back to the 18th century when natural history illustrations were highly sought after. Created by George Edwards and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print combines elements from both artists' works to create a unique composition. In this enchanting scene, we are introduced to two fascinating creatures - the extinct Dodo bird and an adorable Guinea Pig. The Dodo, known for its peculiar appearance and unfortunate extinction, stands tall with its plump body and distinctive beak. Beside it sits the Guinea Pig, a small rodent native to South America that has become popular as a domestic pet. The attention to detail in this engraving is remarkable. Every feather on the Dodo's wings is meticulously depicted, while the texture of the Guinea Pig's fur seems almost touchable. The vibrant colours bring life to these creatures, making them appear almost three-dimensional against a backdrop of lush foliage. This print not only showcases Edwards' talent as an illustrator but also highlights Seligmann's skill as an engraver and art dealer. Their collaboration seamlessly merges different styles into one cohesive artwork that captures our imagination. "The Dodo and the Guiney Pig" serves as a reminder of Earth's diverse fauna throughout history while evoking a sense of nostalgia for these long-lost species. It invites us to appreciate nature's wonders through artistry and reminds us of our responsibility in preserving our planet's biodiversity
