A three-quarter-length portrait to right, wearing armour and a lace cravat. The sitter, wearing his own hair, faces forwards and meets the gaze of the viewer. His right arm rests on a table on which are placed a chart, navigational rule and celestial globe. His left hand is on his hip and a sword hangs down on his left side. In the right background his ship is in action with another, which may be Spanish. The flags in the ship in the background confirm the sitter as Dutch. The date of the painting is uncertain although the action taking place in the right background may refer to the Battle of Vigo Bay of 1702 between the Anglo-Dutch fleet and the Spanish.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the essence of a Dutch Naval Captain during the late 17th century, a time of great naval battles and exploration. The unknown artist from the Netherlandish School skillfully portrays the captain in his full regalia, exuding confidence and authority.
The captain is depicted in three-quarter length, donning armor and a lace cravat with his own hair styled elegantly. His gaze meets that of the viewer, conveying a sense of determination and leadership. Positioned next to him are tools of navigation - a chart, navigational rule, and celestial globe - highlighting his expertise in maritime affairs.
In the background, an intense battle scene unfolds between two ships, likely representing the Battle of Vigo Bay in 1702. The flags flying on one ship confirm its Dutch origin, further emphasizing the captain's allegiance to his country.
This painting not only serves as a historical record but also as a testament to the bravery and skill of naval captains during this tumultuous period. It offers viewers a glimpse into the world of seafaring adventures and strategic warfare that defined this era in maritime history.
