TOWERS CROSSING A FORD, 1872 (oil on canvas)

7215214 TOWERS CROSSING A FORD, 1872 (oil on canvas) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia; (add.info.: 1872//Oil on canvas
The " Mother Volga", a major commercial route, plays a big role in the Russian imagination and inspires artists with a number of novels, paintings and songs. Between 1870 and 1873, Repin created three variants of the Volga haulers. This is the last work, undertaken during his second stay on the banks of the river. The painter completely changes the composition: men are no longer divided into different groups, but form a single mass, which walks towards the viewer as if to break the boundaries of space.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Ilya Repin's masterpiece, "Towers Crossing a Ford" from 1872. The painting, housed in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia, showcases the artist's fascination with the iconic Mother Volga and its significance as a major commercial route. Repin created three versions of this scene between 1870 and 1873, with this being his final rendition during his second stay on the riverbanks. In this composition, Repin transforms the depiction of men hauling goods along the river. Instead of dividing them into separate groups, he unifies them as a single mass moving towards the viewer. This arrangement conveys their determination to break free from spatial boundaries and emphasizes their collective strength. The image evokes feelings of suffering and tiredness prevalent among these workers who endure strenuous labor on a daily basis. It highlights themes of poverty and hardship that were common during that era in Russia. The painting also portrays several individuals engaged in different professions within society. Repin's work not only reflects the physical toll experienced by these workers but also serves as an artistic commentary on societal issues such as precariousness and penury. Through his brushstrokes, he captures both weariness and resilience while showcasing the majestic beauty of rivers like Volga. This print offers viewers a glimpse into Repin's masterful portrayal of human struggle against nature's backdrop—a testament to his skill as an artist capturing both pain and hope within one frame.
