The Cimbri were a Teutonic tribe who made their first appearance in Roman history in the year 113 B.C. They were the first in the long line of the Teutonic invaders of Italy.
The Cimbrian War (113-101 BC) was fought between the Roman Republic and the Germanic tribes of the Cimbri and the Teutones, who migrated from the Jutland peninsula into Roman controlled territory, and clashed with Rome and her allies. The Defeat of the Cimbri - A Glimpse into Ancient Warfare
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in history, depicting "The Defeat of the Cimbri" during the ancient Cimbrian War. Created by Alexandre Gabriel Decamps and based on M. Karl Girardet's fragment, this engraving offers a fascinating glimpse into a clash between two powerful forces. In 113 B. C. , the Teutonic tribe known as the Cimbri emerged onto Rome's historical stage, marking their first appearance in Roman records. The ensuing conflict, known as the Cimbrian War (113-101 BC), pitted these Germanic tribes against the mighty Roman Republic and its allies. The image showcases an intense battlefield scene where women and tribesmen armed with bows and arrows confront Romans amidst a backdrop of chaos. In this classical setting, oxen-drawn carriages transport weapons while cows roam freely nearby. This artwork serves as a reminder that this war was not only significant for Rome but also posed a serious threat to Italia itself – something not seen since the Second Punic War. It symbolizes both conflict and resilience as cultures clashed on Italian soil. "The Defeat of the Cimbri" is more than just an artistic masterpiece; it encapsulates an era when civilizations collided, leaving an indelible mark on history. This print from Bridgeman Images allows us to appreciate both its aesthetic beauty and its historical significance for generations to come.
