EDITORS COMMENTS
The Chart of Malta, 1801 by John Thomas Serres is a captivating snapshot of a pivotal moment in Maltese history. Published during a time of great political upheaval, this chart reflects the island's transition from French control to British protection. In 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte expelled the Knights of the Order of St John from Malta and established French rule over the island. However, just two years later, the Maltese people rose up against their oppressors and sought assistance from the British. Admiral Horatio Nelson, fresh off his victory at the Battle of the Nile, blockaded Valetta and forced the French garrison to surrender. This historic event marked a turning point for Malta as it came under British protection and began its journey towards independence. The intricate details on this map provide insight into the strategic importance of Malta in European politics during this time. As you gaze upon this print, you can almost feel the tension and uncertainty that must have permeated through every corner of Malta in 1801. It serves as a reminder of how power dynamics can shift dramatically within just a few short years and how maps like these capture moments that shape nations forever.
