EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming chromolitho print captures the mischievousness of Teddie and his sister as they adapt a nursery rhyme. In this 19th-century French School artwork, we see the two siblings, soaked from head to toe, standing in front of their auntie with an expression of both fear and surprise on their faces. It seems that their attempt at adapting the popular nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Sixpence" has not gone according to plan. Uncle Bill's pond is now home to frogs instead of blackbirds, and the pie meant for eating has been destroyed in some unknown calamity. The children's adaptation has clearly caused anguish and anxiety for them as they face the consequences of their naughty behavior. The artist skillfully portrays Teddie and his sister as young children full of mischief but also remorseful for what they have done. Their wet clothes symbolize both their misadventure and perhaps a lesson learned. This delightful illustration was originally created for The Graphic's Christmas Number in 1889, showcasing how even classic nursery rhymes can be adapted by imaginative youngsters like Teddie and his sister. It serves as a reminder that childhood is filled with creativity, surprises, and sometimes hard lessons learned along the way.
