Do You Know: Who introduced Christmas trees? (colour litho)

8668103 Do You Know: Who introduced Christmas trees? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Who introduced Christmas trees? Christmas trees were introduced into Britain by the Prince Consort in 1840. Although the custom was new to Victorian England, it had been familiar in Germany for nearly 200 years, and the giving of presents at Christmas may be traced back to pagan Roman times, when gifts changed hands on 1 January. The keeping of Christmas was forbidden under Oliver Cromwell, and 25 December was ordered to be observed as a market day; the eating of plum pudding and mince pies being denounced as heathen practices. At the Restoration the Church of England revived the ancient Christian festival. Illustration for one of a set of 50 "Do You Know?" cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939.); © Look and Learn
