EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a selection of exquisite jewellery and weapons from the Treasure of Childeric, dating back to the 5th century. The intricate craftsmanship and opulent materials, such as gold and garnet, are truly awe-inspiring. Discovered in 1653 within Childeric I's tomb at Tournai, Belgium, this treasure was later gifted to King Louis XIV of France in 1665. Placed in his Cabinet de medailles, these precious objects were unfortunately stolen in 1831. However, some pieces were recovered from the river Seine. The photo highlights various items arranged in rows. At the top row from left to right, we see a lance head (framee), a crystal globe believed to hold significant symbolism, and an axe head known as francisque. In the middle row lies fragments of a scramasax sword – remnants that hint at its former grandeur. The lower rows feature remarkable pieces including bees, a buckle, and a ring. Interestingly enough, these bees were initially used as decorative elements for horse harnesses but eventually caught Emperor Napoleon I's attention. He adopted them as symbolic emblems connecting his Bonaparte dynasty with France's origins under the Merovingian dynasty. This extraordinary photograph allows us to marvel at both historical artifacts and artistic mastery while offering glimpses into ancient civilizations' rich cultural heritage. Preserved within Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris today thanks to their enduring allure and significance; they continue to captivate viewers worldwide with their timeless beauty.
