Ships Passing a Windmill, c.1690 (oil on canvas)

7342717 Ships Passing a Windmill, c.1690 (oil on canvas) by Storck, Abraham (1644-1708); 55.9x68.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Abraham Storck
Storck was one of a family of artists and lived and worked in Amsterdam. Influenced especially by van de Velde, his output was prolific and concentrates on domestic, coastal scenery and celebratory views of his home city. This picture is typical in detailing a range of Dutch shipping, with their tricolour flying prominently from the vessel on the left and that most characteristic feature of the Dutch landscape, a windmill. With many patriotic associations, the image flatters the civic and nationalist pride of Storck's Amsterdam patrons.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on canvas painting by Abraham Storck captures a picturesque scene of ships passing by a windmill in the Dutch landscape around 1690. Storck, influenced by van de Velde, was known for his prolific output of domestic and coastal scenery, often celebrating his home city of Amsterdam. In this particular piece, Storck showcases a range of Dutch shipping with their tricolour flags flying proudly from the vessels. The iconic windmill stands tall against the backdrop of the sea, symbolizing both national pride and civic identity for Amsterdam patrons. The carefully detailed composition highlights the bustling maritime activity along the coast, with each ship meticulously rendered to convey movement and life. The soft colors and intricate brushwork bring an air of tranquility to the scene, capturing a moment frozen in time during the 17th century. As you gaze upon this artwork, you can almost feel the salty breeze coming off the sea and hear the creaking of sails as ships pass by one another. It is a timeless reminder of Holland's rich maritime history and its enduring connection to windmills dotting its scenic landscapes.
