This print titled "Mouth of the Saigon River" takes us on a journey back in time to 19th century Saigon, a French colony known as Cochinchina. The illustration, originally published in Appletons Journal in May 1872, offers a glimpse into the daily life of Vietnamese farmers along the coastal coast. In this picturesque scene, we see a bustling river with small boats navigating its waters. On the riverbank stands an array of houses and huts that form a charming village. Surrounding these dwellings are chicken coops and hen houses, highlighting the importance of agriculture in this region. The presence of cows grazing peacefully nearby further emphasizes the agricultural nature of this community. As we gaze at this snapshot from history, it becomes evident that farming played an integral role in sustaining livelihoods here.
