EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a unique aspect of the Cold War era, showcasing the lengths people would go to influence or distract the GDR frontier guards in East Germany. Taken by an anonymous German photographer in the 20th century, this image is part of a private collection. The photo reveals how various objects were thrown over the border from West Berlin as a means to manipulate or bribe these guards. The scene depicts three instances: a strip-tease magazine tossed at Potsdamer Platz on August 11,1965; a pamphlet attached to a cardboard saucer flung in the Potsdam area on May 15,1965; and finally, a pack of cigarettes hurled at the Brandenburg Gate on August 13,1965. These acts were not only attempts to distract or bribe but also served as forms of propaganda against East Germany. This particular image was likely captured by an East German photographer for their own propaganda purposes. Intriguingly, this photograph sheds light on one aspect of life during that tumultuous time period when tensions ran high between Eastern and Western powers. It serves as both historical evidence and artistic documentation of human ingenuity amidst political turmoil.
