LMS 6399 Fury

The newly-built locomotive 6399 Fury, of the London Midland and Scottish Railway, leaving the Hyde Park works in Glasgow for trials, 7th February 1930. The Fury was an experimental express passenger locomotive using a high pressure steam boiler system, which proved impractical and led to the locomotive being laid up until 1935. It was then rebuilt with a conventional boiler to become 6170 British Legion. (Photo by S. R. Gaiger/Topical Press Agency/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

Taken on February 7th, 1930, in Glasgow's Hyde Park works, the image showcases this experimental express passenger train as it embarks on its trials. The Fury boasted an innovative high pressure steam boiler system; however, practicality issues arose leading to its decommissioning until 1935. Following extensive modifications that included replacing the unconventional boiler with a conventional one, the locomotive was reborn as the renowned 6170 British Legion. Photographed by S. R. Gaiger from Topical Press Agency/Hulton Archive/Getty Images, this archival piece transports us back to an era of railway innovation and advancement. With no people present in the frame, our focus is solely on this magnificent steam-powered machine against a backdrop of open skies. The historical significance of this photograph lies not only in showcasing technological experimentation but also in capturing a moment that marked a turning point for the Fury's future trajectory. This stunning print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance within transportation history.
