EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures a group of pilgrims as they approach St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy, during the 19th century. The scene is filled with a sense of anticipation and reverence as the pilgrims, both men and women, make their final approach to the hallowed grounds of one of Christianity's most significant sites. Some pilgrims are in deep prayer, their hands raised in supplication, while others gesture excitedly towards the basilica, unable to contain their awe and wonder. The print, which is an engraving after a painting by Carl Haag, was exhibited at the Society of Painters in Water-Colours in 1850. Haag's production was described in the Illustrated London News as 'finely characteristic' and the print offers a fascinating glimpse into the pilgrimage experience during the Victorian era. The pilgrims are depicted wearing traditional clothing and carrying various items, including prayer books, rosaries, and walking staffs. Some pilgrims are shown with their hands on their hearts, while others bow their heads in reverence. St. Peter's Basilica, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, looms in the background, its grandeur and majesty on full display. The print offers a poignant reminder of the enduring power of faith and the pilgrimage as a means of spiritual renewal and connection to one's beliefs.
