EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th-century allegorical print, titled "Allegory of the Union of King Karl XI and Queen Ulrika Eleonora," was created by the renowned artist David Klocker Ehrenstrahl in 1692. The artwork celebrates the alliance between the House of Oldenburg's King Karl XI of Sweden and the House of Wittelsbach's Ulrika Eleonora of Denmark. The image is rich in symbolism and allegorical figures. At the center, King Karl XI and Queen Ulrika Eleonora are depicted as seated on thrones, symbolizing their union and the harmony between their two countries. The union is further emphasized by the figure of Concordia, the goddess of harmony, who holds a wreath above their heads. Surrounding the central figures are various allegorical figures and deities. The goddess of peace, Constantia, is shown holding an olive branch, while the god of war, Mars, is represented with a sword and shield, symbolizing the peaceful resolution of potential conflicts between the two countries. The print is filled with cherubs, or Amorini, who represent love and unity. One cherub holds a torch, symbolizing the light of the union, while another holds a crown, representing the unity of the two monarchs. The artwork is adorned with gold and rich colors, reflecting the grandeur and importance of the union being celebrated. The background features a landscape with a castle, representing the heritage and history of the two dynasties. The allegorical figures in the print serve to emphasize the concepts of fidelity, charity, and mansuetudo (gentleness) between the two monarchs, as well as the importance of the alliance for the peace and prosperity of their countries.
