Apollo, the ancient Greek god of the sun, music, poetry, and prophecy, is depicted in this engraving by Hendrik Goltzius from the 16th century, published in the Metamorphoses by Ovid, book 2, plate 14. The scene illustrates the tragic tale of Coronis, a mortal woman whom Apollo had fallen deeply in love with. However, suspicion arose when rumors of Coronis' infidelity reached Apollo, leading him to investigate and discover her unfaithfulness with another man.
