EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of Base Court, the first quadrangle of Wolsey's Palace in Hampton Court. Taken by Donald McLeish in the 1930s, this image showcases the architectural marvel that was started by Cardinal Wolsey in 1514. As one gazes upon this historic site, it is impossible not to be transported back to a time when kings and queens roamed these halls. Hampton Court, located in Richmond upon Thames, London, holds a significant place in British history. After Cardinal Wolsey fell from favor, King Henry VIII took possession of the palace in 1529 and made extensive alterations to its structure. The last monarch to utilize Hampton Court was George II. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past with its monochrome aesthetic and intricate details. The imposing gatehouse stands tall at the entrance of Base Court while an elegant clock adorns one side of the courtyard. This picturesque scene serves as a reminder of England's rich heritage and attracts tourists from all over who are eager to explore Tudor architecture firsthand. Donald McLeish's skillful composition allows us to appreciate both the beauty and historical significance of this remarkable palace. It is through images like these that we can continue to cherish our cultural landmarks for generations to come.
