The Battalion Boxing Team of the First Battalion, The Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment. Poona, I

The 1st Battalion took part in the Egypt Intervention in 1882, fighting in the second battle at Kassassin on 9 September and the Battle of Tel el-Kebir a few days later. The 1st Battalion was one of the first units to be moved to France at the outbreak of World War I, where it became part of the 13th Infantry Brigade in the 5th Infantry Division. Among its first major engagements was the Battle of Mons on 23 August. At the end of the war, the 1st Battalion was transferred back to India, where it took part in the Third Afghan War and the putting down of a Mahsud tribal rebellion in the Northwest Frontier in 1920. It spent the next years in India, returning home to Britain in 1937. From A Pictorial Souvenir and History of the First Battalion, The Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the formidable Battalion Boxing Team of the First Battalion, The Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment. Taken in Poona, India, this image captures a moment frozen in time from the early 20th century. The men stand proudly with their arms folded, exuding strength and determination. Dressed in their semi-dress uniforms, they display a unique blend of military discipline and sporting prowess. Their barechested appearance reflects the physical demands of boxing as well as their readiness for combat. This portrait serves as a testament to their courage, resilience, and camaraderie. Published by The British Historical and Art Publishing Company in 1926, this sepia-toned print evokes a sense of nostalgia for an era long gone. It offers us a glimpse into the lives of these brave men who dedicated themselves to serving their country. As we admire this remarkable photograph today, let us remember the sacrifices made by those who came before us. May it serve as a reminder that even amidst times of war and conflict, there is still room for unity through sportsmanship and teamwork.
