EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite folio from a Ragamala, or Garland of Melodies, depicts Bhairava Raga, a composition in the ancient Indian classical music tradition. The image dates back to the 1650s and originates from Central India, likely Madhya Pradesh. The Ragamala tradition comprises a series of paintings that represent the twenty-two melodic modes (ragas) in Indian music, each accompanied by its associated deity and season. In this painting, Bhairava, a form of Shiva, is depicted in a seated position, flanked by his consort, the goddess Parvati, and two attendants. Bhairava is shown wearing a crown adorned with skulls, symbolizing his role as the lord of time and destruction. The autumnal setting is indicated by the red and gold hues of the painting, as well as the autumnal leaves scattered around the scene. The architecture in the background suggests a palace or temple interior, with intricate carvings and ornate columns. The painting is executed in opaque watercolor and gold on paper, giving it a rich and textured appearance. The figures are depicted in an isometric style, adding to the three-dimensional effect of the artwork. This painting is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of South East Asia and India during the seventeenth century. It is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and is a popular attraction for visitors interested in Asian art and the concept of Ragamala paintings.
