EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the Bombay-Poona Mail, a luxurious train that traversed the Mumbai-Pune section in colonial India. Operated by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, this iconic mode of transportation symbolized progress and connectivity during its time. The Great Indian Peninsula Railway was established on August 1st, 1849 through an act of the British Parliament. Shortly after, it entered into a contract with the East India Company to construct and operate railway lines across the country. This particular image showcases one such line in all its glory. The vibrant colors and intricate details depicted in this print bring to life a bygone era where steam trains ruled the tracks. The majestic locomotive chugged along amidst picturesque landscapes, connecting two bustling cities - Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) and Pune (then called Poona). As we gaze upon this historical artifact from London-based publisher Raphael Tuck & Sons circa 1900, we are transported back to a time when rail travel was considered opulent and glamorous. The Bombay-Poona Mail served not only as a means of transportation but also as an emblem of progress for Maharashtra state. Let us cherish this glimpse into India's rich heritage - where technology met tradition on these very tracks that shaped our nation's history.
