Bridges on the Mississippi, at Dubuque, 1874. Creator: John Filmer

Bridges on the Mississippi, at Dubuque, 1874. The city of Dubuque, Iowa, USA. Above, connected with paths that have been cut through the solid limestone, are the streets of the dwelling-houses. The approaches to these upper houses are mostly by stairs that might easily be called ladders...it is worth the trouble of mounting these ladders...to have such a landscape unrolled before the eye. There is a stretch of bare, sandy island in the centre of the river, across which comes the railway-bridge of the Illinois Central Railroad. There is, at the farther end of the island, a large shot-factory, and close to it the shot-tower, which darts up into the blue sky like a light flame. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Bridges on the Mississippi, at Dubuque, 1874" takes us back in time to the bustling city of Dubuque, Iowa. The image showcases a remarkable feat of engineering as multiple bridges span across the mighty Mississippi River. Above these magnificent structures lies a network of streets that have been meticulously carved through solid limestone. Accessible only by stairs that resemble ladders, the elevated houses offer their residents an awe-inspiring view of the surrounding landscape. In the center of the river stretches a bare sandy island, serving as a striking contrast to its lush surroundings. Connecting this island is none other than the railway-bridge of the Illinois Central Railroad, symbolizing progress and connectivity. At one end of this picturesque island stands a large shot-factory while nearby looms an impressive shot-tower reaching towards the heavens like a flickering flame. These industrial elements add depth and character to an already mesmerizing scene. Captured by John Filmer for "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1874, this historic photograph offers us a glimpse into both architectural marvels and natural beauty from over a century ago. It reminds us how human ingenuity can coexist harmoniously with nature's grandeur while leaving us longing to witness such breathtaking landscapes firsthand.
