Chinese magpies in the Zoological Society's Gardens, Regent's Park, 1862. Creator: Unknown
Chinese magpies in the Zoological Society's Gardens, Regent's Park, [London], 1862. The building in the northern part of the Zoological Society's Gardens in Regents Park, called the "Parrot-house, " contains at the present moment, besides its legitimate occupants - a noisy and numerous set of parrots - several other kinds of foreign birds of great rarity and beautiful plumage. Amongst them is a fine example of the Chinese magpie (Urocissa sinensis), which, although well known from preserved specimens in museums and from its being a very frequent subject of representation in Chinese drawings, has seldom if ever been previously received alive in this country. This bird...was in bad plumage on its first arrival some months ago from the effects of its long voyage and the confined space allowed to it on board ship, but has rapidly recovered itself in the large cage in which it has been placed in the Society's Gardens, and is now in perfect feather. It is lively and active in its habits, and, with its red bill and legs and brilliant plumage, forms a very attractive object'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a Chinese magpie (Urocissa sinensis) in its enclosure at the Zoological Society's Gardens in Regent's Park, London, during the year 1862. The Parrot-house, a prominent building in the northern part of the gardens, housed an array of exotic birds, including this rare and beautiful specimen. The Chinese magpie, although commonly depicted in Chinese art and known through preserved specimens in museums, had seldom been received alive in England prior to its arrival at the Zoological Society's Gardens. Its vibrant plumage, characterized by a mix of black, blue, and green feathers, and its distinctive red bill and legs, make it a striking and alluring sight. Upon its arrival, the magpie was in poor condition due to the rigors of its long voyage and the confined space it had been kept in during transport. However, under the care of the Zoological Society, the bird quickly recovered and thrived in its spacious cage. Its lively and active habits added to its appeal, making it a popular attraction for visitors to the gardens. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the past, providing a window into the world of exotic animals and the excitement they brought to Victorian audiences. The Chinese magpie, with its stunning appearance and intriguing backstory, remains an enduring symbol of the wonders of the natural world and the importance of conservation efforts to preserve and protect rare species.
