Coffin of Senbi, c. 1918-1859 BC. Creator: Unknown

Coffin of Senbi, c. 1918-1859 BC. The most common type of coffin during the Middle Kingdom took the shape of a rectangular box with lid. The mummy inside was placed on his left side, facing east, his head behind the two magical eyes. These--in the shape of human eyes, to which have been added the markings of a falcons head--were supposed to enable him to behold the rising sun, reborn daily. The long horizontal inscriptions are prayers to Anubis (god of embalming) and Osiris (god of the dead) for offerings of food and drink and other items necessary for survival in the afterlife. The short vertical inscriptions place him under the protection of the gods of earth, sky, air, and moisture, as well as various funerary deities

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Coffin of Senbi, a remarkable artifact dating back to c. 1918-1859 BC during Egypt's Middle Kingdom. Crafted by an unknown creator, this coffin represents the most common type of burial vessel from that era - a rectangular box with a lid. Inside the coffin lies the mummy of Senbi, positioned on his left side and facing east towards the rising sun. The lid features two mesmerizing magical eyes, adorned with falcon markings, symbolizing rebirth and enabling him to witness each new day in the afterlife. The coffin is adorned with intricate inscriptions that serve as prayers to Anubis and Osiris - gods associated with embalming and death respectively. These inscriptions request offerings of food, drink, and other necessities for survival in the afterworld. Additionally, vertical inscriptions invoke protection from various deities representing earth, sky, air, moisture along with funerary gods. This comprehensive spiritual safeguard ensures Senbi's safe passage into eternity. Preserved through centuries in gessoed and painted cedar material, this extraordinary piece now resides at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' custodianship. It stands as a testament to ancient Egyptian beliefs surrounding death and their meticulous approach to preparing individuals for their journey beyond life's realm.
