Coffin of Senbi (Lid), 1918-1859 BC. Creator: Unknown

Coffin of Senbi (Lid), 1918-1859 BC. This is the most common type of coffin during the Middle Kingdom. The mummy was placed on his left side, facing east, his head behind the two magical eyes. These--in the shape of human eyes, to which have been added the markings of a falcons head--were supposed to enable him to behold the rising sun, reborn daily. The long horizontal inscriptions are prayers to Anubis (god of embalming) and Osiris (god of the dead) for offerings of food and drink and other items necessary in the afterlife. The short vertical inscriptions place him under the protection of various other cosmic and funerary deities

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Coffin of Senbi (Lid), a remarkable artifact dating back to 1918-1859 BC during Egypt's Middle Kingdom. Crafted by an unknown creator, this coffin lid represents the most common type used during that era. The mummy was carefully placed on its left side, facing east, with its head positioned behind two mystical eyes. These eyes, shaped like human eyes but adorned with falcon markings, were believed to grant Senbi the ability to witness the daily rebirth of the sun. Surrounding these enchanting features are long horizontal inscriptions serving as prayers to Anubis and Osiris - gods associated with embalming and the afterlife respectively - requesting offerings such as food, drink, and other necessities for his journey beyond. The vertical inscriptions found on this ancient masterpiece further ensure Senbi's protection in his cosmic voyage. Various funerary deities are invoked through these inscriptions, safeguarding him throughout eternity. Preserved within gessoed and painted cedar material, this extraordinary piece is now housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Captured beautifully by Heritage Art/Heritage Images in their print collection, it allows us to marvel at the intricate details and profound symbolism embedded within this timeless relic from Egypt's rich history.
