EDITORS COMMENTS
Columbia, 1899: A Test of American Pride and Perseverance This photograph, taken by Johns Johnston on August 2, 1899, captures the damaged Columbia, an American racing yacht designed and built by Nathanael Herreshoff and the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company for owners J. Pierpont Morgan and Edwin Dennison Morgan of the New York Yacht Club. The yacht, a symbol of American maritime prowess, was the defender in the tenth America's Cup race against the British challenger Shamrock. Columbia, with her nickel steel frame, bronze hull, and steel mast, was a marvel of 19th-century engineering. However, during the race, a gust of wind caused her mast to snap, leaving her stranded in the waters off Newport, Rhode Island. The incident was a major disappointment for the American team and their supporters, but it also served as a metaphor for the indomitable spirit of the country. The image of Columbia, with her broken mast, is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced during the race and the determination to overcome them. The men on board, led by Captain Edwin H. Husser, worked tirelessly to repair the damage and get the yacht back in the race. Their efforts paid off when they managed to finish the race, albeit in second place, but with their pride and American spirit intact. This photograph, a dry plate negative glass 8 x 10 in, is a testament to the rich maritime history of the United States and the enduring spirit of competition and perseverance that defined the America's Cup races of the late 19th century.
