Courtesan, early 1700s. Creator: Kaigetsud? Doshin (Japanese, active 1711-1736)

Courtesan, early 1700s. Kaigetsudo Doshin was one of five painters in a studio operating under Kaigetsudo Ando in the Asakusa area of Edo, todays Tokyo. Doshin, like the other members of the studio, adhered closely to Andos style, as well as his specialization, portraits of high-ranking courtesans of the Yoshiwara district like this one. The paintings feature strong ink delineation of the subjects twisting form and bold patterns in the kimono, as well as the absence of any sort of setting. Unlike his master, who focused exclusively on painting, Doshin also produced woodblock prints. Production faltered after Ando was exiled in 1714 for his involvement in a scandal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a courtesan from the early 1700s, skillfully created by Kaigetsudo Doshin, an esteemed Japanese artist. Doshin was part of a renowned studio led by Kaigetsudo Ando in Edo (now Tokyo), where he closely followed his master's style and specialized in portraying high-ranking courtesans from the Yoshiwara district. In this artwork, Doshin beautifully captures the essence of his subject through strong ink delineation and bold patterns adorning her kimono. The absence of any background setting directs our attention solely to the courtesan herself, emphasizing her alluring presence. Unlike Ando, who focused exclusively on painting, Doshin also ventured into woodblock prints. However, their collaborative production faced setbacks when Ando was exiled in 1714 due to scandalous involvement. The hanging scroll format adds elegance to this piece as it gracefully displays the intricate details rendered with ink and color on delicate paper. As we admire this heritage art from Japan's Edo period (1615-1868), we can appreciate Doshin's dedication to preserving Ando's legacy while adding his own artistic touch. This remarkable artwork is housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art and belongs to the ukiyo-e school tradition—a genre that flourished during Japan's Edo period. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has expertly captured this print for us to cherish its beauty and historical significance today.
