The Crow-Boy's Christmas Lunch - drawn by Phiz, 1850. Creator: Unknown

The Crow-Boy's Christmas Lunch - drawn by Phiz, 1850. Illustration to a story about a child who scares crows off the crops for a living: He has had it in his wallet all the morning - an extra store of bread, bacon, and cheese; for this is Christmas Day!...Observe him while engaged in its mastication His cheek is stuffed with the wholesome and savoury morsel; while his dog, with his lips overflowing with slaver, looks up expectantly into his face; and his gun lies idly by the hedge...His gun for this day, at any rate, shall sound no alarm. The season, too, makes the Boy charitable to the poor crows. Out of the treasury of his happiness he can afford to impart a blessing to them. They shall also have their Christmas Day; for though, by convention they are his victims, by Creation they are his fellow-creatures'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

The Crow-Boy's Christmas Lunch,

EDITORS COMMENTS
an exquisite 19th-century illustration drawn by Phiz (Hablot Browne), captures the heartwarming scene of a young boy enjoying his Christmas meal in the midst of a cornfield. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, tells the story of a boy who earns his living by scaring crows away from crops. Dressed in typical Victorian attire, the boy sits in a field, his face plump with the joy of the holiday season. In his hand, he holds a generous portion of bread, bacon, and cheese. His loyal dog, tongue lolling out in anticipation, looks up at him, eager for a taste. The boy's gun, a constant companion in his work, lies idly by the hedge. Despite being a crow scarer, the boy's generosity knows no bounds on this special day. He shares his bounty with the crows, offering them a "Christmas Day" of their own. The season of goodwill and charity extends to all creatures, as the boy recognizes their shared status as fellow creatures. This poignant scene, engraved in black and white, captures the sentimental spirit of the Victorian era. It offers a glimpse into the simple pleasures of rural life and the kindness that could be found even in the most unexpected places. The Crow-Boy's Christmas Lunch is a reminder that even in the midst of hard work and daily struggles, there is always room for joy and compassion.
