Dagger and sheath, c1360-1400, (1881). Creator: J Brooke

Dagger and sheath, c1360-1400, (1881). Etching of a carved ivory dagger with its sheath, made in northern Italy, probably Venice, in the late 14th century. At the top of the handle is a crouching lion, and below that a winged dragon. The top panel of the sheath depicts a man kneeling before a seated female figure, with a bird and a lion in the bottom section. Elaborate and fragile handles such as this were impractical for use as a dagger, but such items were hung at the belt, and were an important part of male display. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artifact from the late 14th century - a dagger and sheath crafted in northern Italy, possibly Venice. The intricate details of this piece are truly awe-inspiring. The etching captures the essence of a carved ivory dagger with its accompanying sheath, both adorned with exquisite decorative elements. At the top of the handle rests a majestic crouching lion, symbolizing strength and power. Just below it, a winged dragon adds an element of mystique and fantasy to this already enchanting piece. The sheath itself is equally impressive, featuring a panel depicting a man kneeling before an elegant seated female figure. In the bottom section, we find depictions of both a bird and a lion. While these elaborate handles may have been impractical for use as functional daggers, they held immense significance as symbols of status and masculinity during that era. Worn at one's belt, such items were meant to impress and display one's wealth or social standing. This particular print comes from "The South Kensington Museum" which was once known as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. It is part of their extensive collection that showcases various works of art throughout history. J Brooke skillfully captured this stunning artifact through his engraving technique in 1881, allowing us to appreciate its beauty even centuries later.
