EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts figures from the Painted Vase of Darius, a remarkable ancient artifact discovered in the 19th century. The vase, which originated in Apulia, Italy, is a large Apulian Amphora and is the biggest of its kind ever found. The exquisite artwork on the vase is divided into three series. In the first series, we see Apollo, the god of the sun and music, depicted with a swan, and Diana, the goddess of the hunt, riding on a stag. Both Apollo and Diana were revered as protectors of Greece. In the second series, Darius I, the King of Kings, is shown seated on a throne, adorned with richly embroidered and jeweled robes and a tiara. Darius ruled over Persia during the 4th century BC. The third series of figures shows a satrap, a Persian governor, receiving tributes from the provinces and kingdoms of Asia. The tributes are depicted as young and beautiful women, represented under their respective emblems, offering precious objects such as paterae, candelabra, and other valuable items to defray the expenses of the war. This photograph print is from an 1857 issue of the Illustrated London News, providing a glimpse into the ancient world and its rich history. The vase's intricate engravings offer a fascinating insight into the religious and cultural practices of ancient Greece and Persia. This artifact is a testament to the beauty and craftsmanship of the ancient world and a reminder of the enduring influence of its history.
