EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled 'The Fire-Brigade, 1850,' depicts a chaotic scene of a fire in Lambeth, south London. The flames, which had been discovered by a policeman of the L division, had already taken hold of several buildings, casting an ominous glow over the night sky. The atmosphere was illuminated for miles around, causing great alarm among the local inhabitants. Firefighters from various stations had arrived at the scene, working tirelessly to extinguish the inferno. Some are seen barefoot, their feet sinking into the muddy ground as they maneuvered hoses and pumps. Others are clad in heavy coats and helmets, their faces etched with determination and focus. The crowd that had gathered around the firemen adds to the sense of urgency and chaos. The technology of the time is evident in the fire engines and hoses, which were the best tools available to combat such disasters. The Victorian-era fire brigade was a vital part of the community, and the men who served in it were hailed as heroes for their bravery and quick thinking. This engraving was published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, providing a snapshot of a significant event in the city's history.
