First relief of Lucknow by General Henry Havelock, Indian Mutiny, 15 September 1857
First relief of Lucknow by General Henry Havelock, Indian Mutiny, 15 September 1857. The siege of Lucknow was one of the major engagements of the uprising against British rule in India which began in 1857. The mutiny had many underlying causes, but was sparked by the introduction of cartridges which were greased with animal fat. This outraged both Muslim and Hindu soldiers (sepoys), who made up the majority of the Indian army at the time. Although the mutiny was defeated in 1859, it led to the administration of India passing from the East India Company to the Crown. Lucknow itself was besieged by mutineers for 87 days from the outbreak of the mutiny until a column commanded by General Sir Henry Havelock broke through on 25th September 1857. Havelocks force was insufficient to break the siege however, and Lucknow was once again surrounded until finally relieved by another, larger force led by General Sir Colin Campbell on 25th November 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the first relief of Lucknow by General Henry Havelock during the Indian Mutiny on 15 September 1857. The siege of Lucknow was a significant event in the uprising against British rule in India, which began in 1857. The underlying causes of the mutiny were numerous, but it was ignited by the introduction of cartridges greased with animal fat, deeply offending both Muslim and Hindu soldiers. For 87 long days, Lucknow remained besieged by mutineers until General Sir Henry Havelock's column broke through on 25th September 1857. Although his force proved insufficient to fully break the siege, this initial relief brought hope and resilience to those trapped within the city walls. The struggle for control over Lucknow continued until another larger force led by General Sir Colin Campbell finally relieved it on 25th November 1857. This marked a turning point not only for Lucknow but also for India as a whole. The image itself is shrouded in mystery as its creator remains unknown. However, it serves as an invaluable historical document that showcases bravery and determination amidst chaos and conflict. It reminds us of the sacrifices made during this tumultuous period and how they ultimately shaped India's path towards independence from British colonial rule. As we gaze upon this poignant photograph print, we are transported back to that fateful day when General Havelock's arrival offered a glimmer of hope amidst despair - forever etching his name into history books alongside other heroes who fought valiantly during one of India's most significant uprisings against foreign domination.
