EDITORS COMMENTS
Fluctuat Nec Mergitur," translated from Latin as "She is tossed by the waves but does not sink," is a powerful and evocative oil painting by Alexandre Seon, created in 1910. This stunning work of art depicts a flooded cityscape, with the waters of a turbulent river engulfing the streets and buildings, leaving only the tips of their towering facades visible above the surface. In the foreground, a lone figure stands defiantly on a wooden platform, her bare feet submerged in the murky water. She clutches a traditional French dress to her chest, her expression a mix of determination and resignation. Around her, other figures can be seen wading through the water, some carrying belongings on their backs or balancing precariously on rafts. The painting is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, as well as a poignant reminder of the power of nature. The use of rich, saturated colors and bold brushstrokes adds to the sense of drama and emotion, while the inclusion of various nautical elements, such as sailing ships and daisy-covered docks, adds a sense of history and tradition. Originally part of the collection of the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, "Fluctuat Nec Mergitur" is a beloved and iconic work of French art from the 19th century. Its haunting beauty and powerful symbolism continue to captivate viewers and inspire artists to this day.
