This watercolor painting, titled "Gabriel Ravel as Sawney Box," was created by the renowned American artist Alfred Jacob Miller between 1855 and 1859. The subject of the portrait is Gabriel Ravel, a French actor who gained popularity in the United States during the nineteenth century for his performances in pantomimes and theatrical productions. Ravel is depicted here in a full-length portrait, dressed in the elaborate costume of the fictional character Sawney Box. The character, which originated in Scotland, was a notorious cannibal who lived with his family in the woods. In the American theatrical tradition, Sawney Box was often portrayed as a grotesque and comical figure, as evidenced by Ravel's exaggerated appearance in this painting. Ravel wears a colorful, patchwork apron and coat, adorned with various props and accessories that would have been used in his performance.
