EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling interior of the famous GUM store in Moscow during the 1970s. The artist, CM Dixon, skillfully portrays a scene that exudes both grandeur and consumerism. GUM, an acronym for State Department Stores in the former Soviet Union, was renowned for its abundance of consumer goods - a rarity in that era. The Upper Trading Rows, designed by Alexander Pomerantsev and Vladimir Shukhov between 1890 and 1893, stand as a testament to Russian medieval architecture with their steel framework and glass roof. This neoclassical masterpiece is now transformed into a modern shopping mall but retains its historical charm. In this image, men and women can be seen navigating through the crowded aisles filled with various shops. The perspective captured by Dixon allows us to appreciate not only the vastness of this emporium but also its architectural beauty. It serves as a reminder of how artistry can coexist within commercial spaces. As we delve into this snapshot from the past, it becomes evident that GUM was more than just a department store; it represented an era defined by progress and changing societal norms. This photograph transports us back to an age where people gathered under one roof to indulge in retail therapy amidst stunning surroundings. CM Dixon's work immortalizes not only a specific location but also an entire country's cultural heritage. Through his lens, he invites us to explore Russia's rich history while simultaneously celebrating human ingenuity within architectural marvels like GUM store.
