EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-carved sandstone sculpture depicts a Jain family group from the 6th century, a rare find from the Indian subcontinent. The serene expression and contented posture of the figures suggest a deep connection to their religious beliefs. The central figure, likely the head of the family, is a man dressed in simple clothing and seated in a meditative pose, with his hands in the Anjali mudra, a common gesture of respect and greeting in Jainism. To his right, a woman, possibly his wife, is shown seated with her hands in the lap, a symbol of modesty and submission. Two children, a boy and a girl, playfully gesticulate towards each other, their innocent joy adding a delightful contrast to the pious atmosphere. The family is surrounded by nature, with trees and plants forming the backdrop, reflecting the Jain belief in the interconnectedness of all living beings. This beautifully crafted statuette, with its cream colored sandstone and intricate details, is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of South Asia during the early medieval period. Currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), this Jain family group is a precious reminder of the cultural diversity and spiritual traditions that have shaped the world.
