EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph captures the portrait of Johann Friedrich Bottger, a renowned German chemist and ceramicist, taken around 1895. Bottger, also known as Botticher (1682-1719), is credited as the originator of Dresden china, a type of porcelain that became highly sought after during his time. In 1706, when Sweden invaded Saxony, Bottger and his colleagues were forced to evacuate from Dresden in order to protect their trade secrets. However, under royal patronage in 1708, he was appointed as the director of large ceramic factories. It was during this period that he perfected European white porcelain in 1715. Unfortunately for Bottger, his ambition got him into trouble when he attempted to sell the secret process behind his porcelain creation in 1716. As a result, he found himself imprisoned for this act. The image showcases Bottger's profile with great detail and clarity. His expression reflects determination and intelligence befitting an inventor of such significance. This print serves as a reminder of the immense contributions made by individuals like Johann Friedrich Bottger to the fields of science and ceramics. Captured within this photograph is not only a snapshot from history but also an homage to one man's dedication towards perfecting his craft amidst adversity.
