EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures King George V, alongside General Sir Henry Seymour Rawlinson and General Congreve, at St Georges Hill near Fricourt on the 10th of August 1916. Fricourt, a small village in the Somme region of northern France, witnessed intense fighting during World War I's Battles of the Somme and Albert. King George V was born on June 3rd, 1865, as the second son of Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark. In 1893, he married Princess Mary with whom he had six children. Following his father's death in 1910, he ascended to the throne as king. Throughout his reign, King George V made significant contributions to British politics and society. In 1924, he appointed Ramsay MacDonald as Britain's first Labour Prime Minister—an important milestone for political inclusivity in the country. Additionally, in 1932, King George V introduced an annual tradition by broadcasting a Christmas message to the people—a heartfelt gesture that continues today. Tragically, King George V succumbed to influenza on January 20th, 1936—leaving behind a legacy marked by progressive leadership and dedication to his nation. His eldest son Edward succeeded him as king. This remarkable photograph serves not only as a historical record but also reminds us of the sacrifices made during times of war while capturing a moment shared between influential figures who shaped their era through their actions and decisions.
