(The First Demonstrations of the Crowd on Constitution Square, Athens, December 1, 1916) is a poignant photograph from the early days of the Noemvriana uprising in Athens, Greece, during the First World War. The image, published in "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 1" by L'Illustration, Paris, in 1924, captures the raw energy and determination of the crowd as they gather in the heart of the city. The Balkan Campaign of World War I had reached Greece in late 1916, and the country was in the throes of political instability. King Constantine I had called for a national plebiscite to decide whether Greece should continue its participation in the war. The result was a resounding rejection of the monarchy, and the king was forced to abdicate. In the aftermath, a period of chaos and violence ensued, known as the Noemvriana. This photograph captures the first demonstrations of the people of Athens, who had taken to the streets to celebrate the end of the monarchy and express their desire for a democratic government. The image shows a group of men, some in military uniforms, others in civilian clothes, gathered on Constitution Square, waving flags and chanting slogans.
