Main Gate of St. Bartholomews, Londons Eldest Hospital, c1935. Creator: Donald McLeish
Main Gate of St. Bartholomew s, Londons Eldest Hospital, c1935. The Henry VIII gate of St Bartholomews Hospital (known as Bart s) at Smithfield in the City of London. The hospital was founded in 1123 by Rahere. This gatehouse, designed by John Strong, was built in the early 18th century to commemorate the fact that King Henry VIII did not abolish Barts along with the priories during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s. The sculpture of Henry in the niche above the gate is the only outdoor statue of him in the whole of London. The hospital is still operating today. From " Wonderful London, Volume 3", edited by Arthur St John Adcock. [The Fleetway House, London, c1935]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Main Gate of St. Bartholomew's, London's oldest hospital, dating back to approximately 1935. Designed by John Strong in the early 18th century, this gatehouse stands as a testament to King Henry VIII's decision not to dissolve Barts during the tumultuous Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s. The sculpture of Henry himself adorns a niche above the gate, making it an extraordinary sight as it is the only outdoor statue of him throughout all of London. This architectural masterpiece showcases elements of both Baroque and Neo-Classical styles, adding to its grandeur and historical significance. Founded in 1123 by Rahere, St. Bartholomew's Hospital continues its noble mission even today. Situated at Smithfield in the heart of City of London, this iconic institution has been providing medical care for centuries. Donald McLeish skillfully captured this image for "Wonderful London, Volume 3" edited by Arthur St John Adcock. The monochrome composition adds depth and timelessness to this remarkable piece of British history. As we gaze upon this photograph print from Heritage Images with admiration, we are reminded that amidst changing times and evolving architecture, some landmarks stand tall as guardians of our past while continuing their vital role in shaping our present and future.
