Marie and Pierre Curie, physicists, 1904
Marie and Pierre Curie, physicists, 1904. Photograph with their daughter Irene. Curie and her husband Pierre continued the work on radioactivity started by H Becquerel. In 1898, they discovered two new elements, polonium and radium. Marie did most of the work of producing these elements, and her notebooks are still too radioactive to use. She went on to become the first woman to be awarded a doctorate in France, and continued her work after Pierres death. In 1903 they shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Becquerel

Marie and Pierre Curie - Pioneers of Radioactivity, 1904
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photograph captures the renowned physicists Marie and Pierre Curie alongside their daughter Irene. Taken in 1904, it showcases a moment of respite for this extraordinary family amidst their groundbreaking scientific endeavors. Marie and Pierre dedicated their lives to expanding our understanding of radioactivity, building upon the work initiated by H Becquerel. In 1898, they made an astonishing discovery - two new elements named polonium and radium. It was Marie who tirelessly labored to produce these elements, although her notebooks remain too radioactive for safe use even today. Not only did Marie become the first woman in France to earn a doctorate degree but she also continued her research after Pierre's untimely death. Their remarkable contributions were recognized when they jointly received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 along with Becquerel himself. In this serene garden setting, we witness Marie seated on a bench while Pierre stands beside her. The image exudes an air of intellectual curiosity mixed with familial warmth as Irene stands close by. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that this Polish-born chemist turned scientist couple had on the field of physics during the early 20th century. Captured by The Print Collector from Heritage Images' collection, this portrait immortalizes not just famous individuals but also symbolizes progress achieved through unwavering dedication to scientific exploration.
