EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Marta Abreu de Estevez, a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on the history of Cuba. Born in 1845, she was not only known as a patriot but also as a generous benefactor to her community in Santa Clara. In this portrait from the 1920s, Marta Abreu exudes strength and determination. Her piercing gaze reflects her unwavering commitment to supporting the Cuban revolution against oppression and inequality. Despite being married to Dr Luis Estevez, she independently sent over one hundred thousand pesos of their earnings from Paris to Delegate Estrada Palma for the cause. Marta Abreu's philanthropic endeavors extended beyond funding the revolution; she dedicated herself to improving the lives of those less fortunate in Santa Clara. Her numerous charitable works aimed at alleviating poverty stand as a testament to her compassion and empathy for others. Tragically, Marta Abreu's life came to an end in 1909. However, her legacy lives on through this powerful image that immortalizes her contributions and selflessness. This cigar card from "The History of Cuba" serves as a reminder of her significant role in shaping North and Central America's history. As we admire this monochrome portrait, let us remember Marta Abreu de Estevez not just as a noble lady but also as an embodiment of resilience, generosity, and dedication towards creating positive change within society.
