EDITORS COMMENTS
This folio, titled Nata Ragini, is a stunning example of a Ragamala (Garland of Melodies) painting from the 17th century, specifically the 1670s. The origins of this artwork are uncertain, but it is believed to have originated from the Rajasthan region of India, possibly in the Bundi or Rajput school. The painting is rendered in exquisite black and white, with intricate line work and delicate shading. The image depicts three male figures engaged in an afternoon combat, set against a backdrop of the summer season. The central figure, dressed as a warrior, rides a horse, brandishing a sword in one hand and a shield in the other. He wears a red turban and a thick moustache, signifying his high caste status. Two other men, perhaps of lower caste or status, approach the rider on horseback, each armed with swords. The concept of Ragamala paintings originated from Hindu mythology, where each painting represented a different melody or raga. The figures in the painting were often depicted in various stages of combat or warfare, symbolizing the different emotions and moods associated with each raga. This rare and beautiful artwork is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Hindoostan (India) and Southeast Asia, and is now part of the esteemed collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). The intricate details and the intense energy of the scene make it a fascinating study of the combat and warrior traditions of the time.
