Paglesham Regatta - Start of the First-Class Oyster-Smacks, 1858. Creator: Unknown

Paglesham Regatta - Start of the First-Class Oyster-Smacks, 1858. Britannia; Rosalind; Don Juan; Waterwitch; Gnome...The day was beautifully fine, with a good breeze from the north-west. In the centre of the river, gaily dressed, lay the Gnome yawl, A. Arcedeckne, Esq. Commodore of the Royal London Yacht Club, who had kindly made his vessel the flagship of the day...The course was just from above the flag-ship to round a boat off Bramskill, back round a boat off Black Edge, twice over, and finishing off the Gnome...the river was enlivened by the presence of several yachts under sail. At eleven o'clock the Commodore arrived on board his yacht, and almost immediately the preparatory gun was fired. Fifteen vessels lay at their moorings, divided into three classes, according to their known capabilities...All these vessels are working craft in the oyster-dredging, but almost perfect yachts in build and appointment'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Paglesham Regatta - Start of the First-Class Oyster-Smacks, 1858," showcases an impressive line-up of yachts participating in a regatta on the River Crouch in Essex, England. The image, taken from an unknown photographer, captures the excitement and elegance of the event as the first-class oyster-smacks prepare for the race. The day was blessed with fine weather and a strong north-west wind, creating ideal sailing conditions. The Commodore of the Royal London Yacht Club, A. Arcedeckne, Esq., graciously made his vessel, the Gnome yawl, the flagship of the day. The Gnome, with its gaily dressed crew, can be seen anchored in the center of the river. The course for the race was set from above the flagship, around a boat off Bramskill, back around a boat off Black Edge, and finishing off the Gnome. The river came alive with the presence of several yachts under sail, adding to the picturesque scene. At eleven o'clock, the Commodore arrived on board his yacht, and the preparatory gun was fired. Fifteen vessels were present, divided into three classes based on their known capabilities. Despite their primary function as working craft in the oyster-dredging industry, these vessels were almost perfect yachts in build and appointment, as evidenced by their sleek designs and meticulous detailing. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing the marriage of functionality and elegance in the world of 19th-century yachting. The Paglesham Regatta of 1858 remains a testament to the rich maritime heritage of Essex and the enduring allure of competitive sailing.
