The Queen and the Court were assembled in state; and, as soon as the door of the audience-chamber was opened, the Ambassadors and their suite (eight persons altogether) appeared. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled 'Reception of the Siamese Ambassadors, with Presents, by Her Majesty, at Windsor Castle, 1857,' transports us back in time to an era of grandeur and diplomacy. The image, created by an unknown artist for the Illustrated London News, showcases a significant moment in international relations between Britain and Siam (now Thailand). The scene is set at Windsor Castle, where Queen Victoria and her court are assembled in state, eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Siamese Ambassadors. As the door to the audience chamber opens, the ambassadors and their suite, consisting of eight individuals, make their entrance. They proceed to make profound salaams and throw themselves on their knees before the Queen, maintaining this posture as they approach the throne. The principal ambassador then reads his address to Her Majesty. The exit from the audience is equally ceremonial, with the ambassadors retreating in a retrograde movement, keeping their faces towards the Queen. The room is adorned with exquisite chandeliers and intricate fortifications, while the ambassadors and their suite are dressed in their finest apparel. The men wear military uniforms, while the women are elegantly dressed, reflecting the fashion of the time. This photograph print offers a glimpse into the customs and protocols of diplomatic receptions during the 19th century. It is a testament to the importance of international relations and the role of diplomats in maintaining peace and fostering alliances between nations.
