France had invaded the island in 1883, precipitating the First Franco-Hova War, and still had colonial designs on Madagascar. The French invaded again in 1895 (Second Franco-Hova War) and formally annexed Madagascar the following year. Ravanolova III was forced into exile in Algeria.
