Silver-Gilt Shrine, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Silver-Gilt Shrine, 1850. Item from an Exhibition of Ancient and Mediaeval Art at the Society of Arts, in John-street, Adelphi, [London]. Shrines or caskets such as this were made to hold the relics of Saints, and were often set with precious stones. This example is... of the fifteenth century [and] is from the collection of Mr. Magniac. It is of silver gilt, relieved - having figures of Christ and the Apostles placed round it, in canopied niches - and derives a striking effect from the pinnacled buttresses placed at its angles. Although its history is involved in obscurity, the simplicity and elegance of its design attract immediate attention, in preference to those more elaborately-enriched reliquaries of which there are several in the Exhibition, from the Cathedral of Basle and elsewhere'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite Silver-Gilt Shrine, dating back to the fifteenth century, is a captivating artifact from an era steeped in religious devotion and artistic craftsmanship. The shrine, currently part of the collection of Mr. Magniac, was showcased at the 'Exhibition of Ancient and Mediaeval Art' held at the Society of Arts in London, 1850. Originally designed to house the relics of saints, shrines like this one were adorned with precious stones and intricate designs. This particular shrine, made of silver gilt, boasts figures of Christ and the Apostles placed in canopied niches. The pinnacled buttresses at its angles add an impressive architectural dimension, creating a striking visual effect. Despite its rich history being shrouded in obscurity, the shrine's understated elegance and simplicity immediately captivate the viewer. Its design stands out from other more elaborately-enriched reliquaries in the exhibition, such as those from the Cathedral of Basle and elsewhere. The Illustrated London News, in its 1850 edition, described this masterpiece as a "striking example of the silver gilt work of the Middle Ages." The newspaper's appreciation for the shrine's beauty and historical significance echoes the awe it would have inspired in its original audience during the Victorian era. This print, preserved in the collection of The Print Collector, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the artistry and devotion that went into creating such a remarkable object.
