EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of St. Mary's National Schools and the new drinking-fountain in Chatham, Kent, dating back to 1864. The engraving from a photograph by Mr. R. Taylor showcases the impressive architecture designed by Mr. G.E. Street, reflecting the Victorian Gothic style of the era. The 'public drinking-fountain' was not only a practical addition for providing water supply but also served as a memorial to Prince Consort, adding a touch of elegance and significance to the landscape. The schools themselves were erected in 1860 with meticulous attention to detail, including three schoolrooms, a classroom, and housing for teachers accommodating around 300 children. The cost of £2400 for these buildings demonstrates the commitment to education and community welfare during that time period. The contractor responsible for this project was Mr. Wilkins of Chatham, ensuring that every aspect was executed with precision and care. Overall, this print is not just an architectural marvel but also a glimpse into history showcasing how public utility projects were intertwined with commemorative gestures towards royalty in 19th-century Britain. It stands as a testament to craftsmanship and dedication towards creating spaces that serve both practical needs and symbolic purposes within society at large.
