St. Michaels New Church, Pimlico, 1844. Creator: Unknown

St. Michaels New Church, Pimlico, 1844. Church in Chester Square, Pimlico, London, designed by Thomas Cundy. It is calculated to accommodate 1200 persons, 800 seated in pews, and 400 in free seats: the cost will be £ 8900, including a lofty tower and spire, of 150 feet in height. The style of architecture is that termed Decorated Gothic, such as prevailed about the middle of the 14th century. The exterior of the building is faced with Kentish rag-stone, with quoins and dressings of Bath stone...We regret to add, that the building of the church-tower has been suspended by order of the Admiralty, until the Semaphore on Chelsea College has been altered, the working of winch would otherwise have been interrupted. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of St. Michaels New Church in Pimlico, London, as it stood proudly in 1844. Designed by the talented architect Thomas Cundy, this magnificent church was built to accommodate an impressive 1200 individuals, with seating for 800 in pews and an additional 400 in free seats. The cost of constructing this architectural marvel amounted to a staggering £8900. The church's design reflects the popular Decorated Gothic style that flourished during the mid-14th century. Its exterior is adorned with Kentish rag-stone, complemented by exquisite Bath stone quoins and dressings. However, it is unfortunate to note that construction of the church tower has been temporarily halted due to orders from the Admiralty. This pause was necessary until alterations were made to the Semaphore on Chelsea College so as not to disrupt its operation. This remarkable engraving appeared in "Illustrated London News" back in 1844 when Victorian England was at its peak. It offers us a glimpse into a time when religion played a significant role in society and architectural masterpieces like St. Michaels New Church were celebrated. As we admire this stunning image captured by an unknown artist, we are transported back through time to witness both the beauty of neo-Gothic architecture and the historical significance of religious institutions within British culture.
